Cabled Array Webinar Archive This capability is an integral part of the Cabled Array portion of the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatory Initiative. Wilcock et al.
Data from the OOI broadband and short-period seismometers and low frequency hydrophones at Axial Seamount, Slope Base, and Southern Hydrate Ridge and bottom pressure sensors in Axial caldera installed between July-October 2014 are now available through the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS).
Team member Dana Manalang has made a great stride forward in telling the story of the RCA; she has just published a children’s book called ROPOS and the Underwater Volcano about a robot named Ropos who works tirelessly building the observatory at Axial Seamount. If you are interested in setting up a meeting, please send an email to ooicable@uw.edu.
Investigators can schedule a one-one-one meeting to discuss their proposed plans and to learn more about the capabilities of the Cabled Array infrastructure.
The eruption was predicted in 2014 and is currently the most accurate eruption forecast of this volcano made so far.
Its better monitoring and comprehension could help diminish hazards at other volcanoes that do pose risks for the surrounding population. Staff Consultations: Cabled Array Cabled Array One-on-One Meetings. On August 7th, the OOI Cabled Array team, along with … Preliminary Seismometer and Hydrophone Data on IRIS. Axial Seamount is a large and active submarine volcano along the Juan de Fuca midocean ridge off the coast of the western United States. … The April 2015 eruption of the Axial Seamount underwater volcano has been confirmed by the latest research of the University of Washington (UW) OOI Cabled Array group. Eruptions in 1998 and 2011 were followed by periods of magma recharge, making it an ideal location to include in the Ocean Observatories Initiative Cabled Array. The caldera and rift zones of the Axial Seamount off the coast of Oregon, depicted as a computer generated 3D oblique view using seafloor bathymetry. The high definition video is streamed through an electro-optical cable stretching from Pacific City, OR to Axial Seamount. “This exciting sequence of events documented by the OOI-Cabled Array at Axial Seamount gives us an entirely new view of how our planet works,” said Richard Murray, division director for ocean sciences at the National Science Foundation. Over the course of a 24-hour period, these instruments detected ~8,000 earthquakes and a seafloor drop of 2.4 m. The Axial workshop was held to explore how ocean drilling and related these reasons, Axial Seamount was chosen as one of the key sites on the National Science Foundations’ (NSF) Ocean Observatories Initiative’s (OOI) cabled observatory network, the Cabled Array (CA). Ropos has been hard at it for the past five years and thus became the star of the book. Axial Seamount is home to the world’s first underwater volcano observatory NeMo and since late 2014, is continuously monitored by an underwater observatory network known as the Cabled Array.
