Daintree Rainforest Facts: Animals The Australian free tree frog is just one of the many animals that live at Daintree Rainforest. Promising lush greenery and breath-taking views across the ancient scenery it lures visitors across the globe. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Daintree Rainforest is the staggering diversity of its wildlife. Daintree River Possum - a little-known Ringtail Possum with a very small distribution range in the higher altitudes of the Daintree (Thornton’s Peak).
Musky Rat Kangaroo - the most primitive of the kangaroos, it is also the smallest and the only one with five toes. The Daintree River has a population of about 70 adult crocodiles, the largest being the males at about 5 metres. I grew up in Sydney but fell in love with North Queensland and moved here over 20 years ago.
The females reach about 3.5 metres, and there are many juveniles and hatchlings.
Their preferred habitat is cooler, mistier rainforest with high rainfall levels. The Daintree River Ringtail possum is yet another of the animals in the Daintree that can’t be found elsewhere. Interestingly, these little guys only dwell in three specific mountains in the Daintree: Thornton Peak, Mount Windsor Tableland and Mount Carbine Tablelands.
