When we finally saw them coming back off of Gannett we figured out that from our base camp it had taken them 11 to 12 hours to do the 8 mile round trip above Titcomb Lakes. I've climbed (or attempted) Gannett Peak 4 times. In this case, our goal of getting out safely was paramount to our goal of summiting Gannett Peak. We really started to wonder how hard the 8 mile round trip to the summit and back would be. Day 6: Titcomb Basin to Island Lake 7 miles 643 ft. elevation gain. The peak is well-hidden deep in Wyoming's Wind River Range and is surrounded by glaciers. I've always done the Glacier Trail to avoid the 1200' of elevation gain on Bonney Pass and to get a closer base camp.

It's a gnarly mountain for sure! We backpacked a 56 mile route in 5 days with a total gain of about 12,800 feet. Half of the battle is the approach. They were running the trail up Gannett Peak and we heard them talking about maintaining 11 minute miles.
