Frederick Douglass was an African American who escaped from slavery and went on to become one of the most prominent leaders in the fight to end slavery in 19th century America.

Early Years. Harriet Tubman Perhaps one of the best known personalities of the Civil War, Harriet Tubman was born into slavery as Araminta Ross, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, sometime in 1820 or 1821. In July of 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered a speech titled “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?,” a call for the promise of liberty be applied equally to all Americans.

It got its name because slaves escaping at night followed the North Star in the sky to freedom.

By 1860, Douglass was well known for his efforts to end slavery and his skill at public speaking. Frederick Douglass was an incredibly talented writer and orator who escaped slavery and brought the issue of slavery to the attention of people in the 1840s, 50s, and 60s.
